Potato slicer, a versatile classic kitchen gadget.
As a kitchen gadget a
potato slicer is a versatile classic that enjoys
many uses other than just slicing potatoes, perhaps
because the potato slicer remains as one of the safest,
easiest and most efficient kitchen items in use.
However, while an excellent potato
slicer can be used for all sorts of vegetables like
onions, zucchinis, carrots, turnips, cucumbers,
radishes, squash etc., the traditional use of a potato
slicer is to make every child's favorite, "French
fries", just like mom used to make.
The origin of the potato slicer is
unclear but it has helped speed the process of food
preparation for decades especially in making French
fries and potato chips.
As for the history of the potato,
Peruvian Indians were the first to cultivate potatoes as
far back as 200 B.C. but it was not until 1621 before
they were introduced in North America. French Fries were
first introduced to the U.S. when Thomas Jefferson
served them in the White House during the first decade
of the 1800's. Then in 1853, the potato chip was created
when chef George Crum sliced some potatoes paper-thin,
fried them in hot oil, salted and served them to
railroad magnate Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt.
